What is a Sitemap file and why your web site should have one?
There are two types of sitemaps: HTML and XML Sitemaps. HTML sitemap is a HTML page listing that lists all pages of your site and such pages are broken down into logical sections to help users find the information they need on your web site. XML Sitemaps were developed to facilitate submitting of your web site changes to Google. By sumiting your web site changes to Google you assure Google indexes your web site in its entirety. Attention Interactive uses XML Sitemaps.Sitemaps are most useful if traditional indexing has been obstructed in some way – for example if you have dynamic content which comes from the database and is not stored in your HTML pages. Also, I some pages have Ajax or Flash and have not been indexed by Google, you can assure Google knows about these pages by submitting them to Google.
Google is indexing web sites by following links from one web site to another web site. Your site should be well linked with other sites and those other sites should be indexed by Google as well. If you site is new and doesn't have too many links pointing to it, you should use Sitemap to tell Google that you do exist.
By connecting your web site via XML to Google, you will be updating Google index automatically as your web site changes and Google will simply have more information about your web site. Google doesn't guarantee that all pages you submit will be added to their index, but it will help Google index more of your web site. By doing so, Google will be more familiar with your site architecture and it will crawl your web site a lot more efficiently.
